One Single Impression -- Assimilation

Chameleon

in each new place
she changed
picking up the local
cadences,
vocabulary,
like protective coloring
she went native.

Went native...Words have been wonderfully assimilated.

Wow, Sue--
Like this--it surprised me. I guess if you assimilate enough, you will go native. Hm...thanks for this thoughtful piece!

Excellently done. It reminded me a bit of myself, moving round a lot, and always assimilating, to a point, to where I was.

Very cool piece. This is exactly how I became when I was learning a new language. I traveled to the place and... assimilated. It worked great.

Native is such a wonderful approach compared to 'fitting in'. Wonderful piece.

I loved this...and could really relate. I grew up as an Army brat, and 'went native' many times as we moved from place to place.

in my earlier years i, too, have become native to many areas that weren't home. native, that is an excellent term, think of all you are native too.

Well, the ultimate form of fitting in, don't you think? I do know someone who has done that, though.

this is so familiar. how the new becomes native. you begin to dream in the language of place.

for me more a longing to see with new eyes than a desire to blend

I have joined you in this journey. Growing up on the West Coast and living all over the country I find my language always in flux.
