One Single Impression -- Descent

angle of sun
creeps slowly towards
the horizon,
afternoons shorten,
shadows lengthen
cross lawns;
summer greens
fade as
first one leaf
then another
flutter gently,
spiraling earthward,
evening chill
comes early,
as earth
its descent
to winter.

1 October 2009

The world seems to pause and catch its breath as summer comes to an end, and autumn begins. Before the colors burst forth, the signs of autumn are subtle. The forest is just a little bit thinner, more sky and sunlight shine through. The leaves have dulled, no longer the rich green of summer. A good time for reflection.

A time for reflection, yes. The autumn colors are to be admired too. Good prompt, and a lovely post. Cheers!

This one's timely. I felt the first chill this morning. I love the beginning of every season.
Great words.

Tomorrow, my two sisters are going on a trip to the northwest mountains here in Georgia. It is apple season and they will buy apples and other apple products.

I know the leaves on the Bradfors Pear trees will soon start shedding their shade and go to sleep for the winter time.

The simplicity of your words honors autumn.

One leaf falls, one breath held; then another... you described this shifting season so very well.

This time of year would be wonderful for me too, but our summers here in Texas, especially Houston is much longer.

This is a lovely piece.

Your poem is a perfect painting of this season. I love how we can see more as the leaves fall from the trees. Sometimes homes appear that have been hidden for months. Thank you for this prompt!
