spying on the porch feeder

Finally found a way to get some photographs without disturbing the birds. Melted a small area of the thick ice on the storm door, then sat just behind a crack in the door and shot pictures through the cleared area -- hence the streaks.

Today's visitors are mostly cardinals and finches. I've long debated whether these are purple finches or house finches. Their bodies are more like house finches, but their beaks are more like purple finches. If there is anyone out there with the definitive answer I'd love to know.

There's also been a few chickadees and tufted tit-mice.

Sue,
I have a cookie sheet nailed to a railing on my front porch and I have seen all the same birds which you took photos of. One reason I put the pan there was that I read it was hard for a cardinal to stand on a feeder and eat

Two of my biggest problems are greedy pigeons and selfish squirrels. They chase the other birds away every time they come near.

Sue, had to come over after seeing the photos on your FB page. I would guess those are house finches. I really am in love with that little tufted titmouse.

I could watch those birds all day. I would love to have a bird feeder and see those pretty visitors :)

Hi Sue, been missing you! Little did I know that your last OSI, Departed, meant goodbye. Yours were excellent in my book.
The group has now split off, one does haiku only, OSI is still all formats. But not so many are there anymore. I am doing both for now.

I am glad you 'reinvested' some of our proceeds from the mural into a nice, very nice, easel. Yes, you needed that.

When I first saw your uncompleted picture of hubby it was the bottom one. I thought you might be doing a copy of a Van Gough although it would have been one I had never seen. The coloring is similar to some of his.
